This is me in your car
Looking at the moon
One of the few things we share
Her icy fullness a natural mirror of our strange familiarity
When the sparks rose from the fire
And the music played
I saw it peek through the branches
You asked me why I was laughing
It’s just that sometimes I feel happiness

I was not made for this world
With its aggression
Its speed
And bad driving
Where is kindness?
Not here
Basic goodness?
Buried so deep
And no time or energy or inclination
To dig it up
I am weak in the eyes of this world
Wet around the edges
Voice peeled back
Raw with frustration
Sorry I’m late
I stopped on the bridge
To look at the moon for a bit
Catch my breath
